Workshop starfish classroom


Our in-class workshops are ideal for children from Kindergarten through to grade 6. Each workshop is accompanied by a Teacher Resource Package to help educators maximize the learning experience before and after each Mad Science workshop.

Here are just a few of our fun and interactive workshops that focus on science and engineering practice:


Harnessing Heat - Students learn about the concepts of heat and heat transfer. Witness the practical side of heat-sensitivity— thermal paper browns under the force of a heat gun and ice cubes melt on a heat transfer block. Students participate in a tactile temperature test, boil liquids with their very hands. Observe an underwater volcano and see how molecules act when they are hot and cold. The class wraps up with a yummy demonstration on what happens when sugar is heated and cooled again as cotton candy is made for all. (K to 6)


Lights, Color, Action - Observe demonstrations that blend colors to produce white light, and others that separate white light into colors. Experiments with prisms and diffraction lenses give students the opportunity to explore the color spectrum of various light sources. A chromatography activity demonstrates separating printed colors on a filter. Students look at the world through tinted lenses to experience color-blindness and see through the eyes of animals. (K to 6) This workshop has an additional equipment fee.


Magnetic Magic - Students use magnetic wands, explore magnetic attracting and repelling forces, confuse compass needles, and magnetize paper clips. Entertaining demonstrations show the magnet’s gravity-defying abilities and educate students about the Earth’s magnetic properties. Students continue the lessons at home with the Magnet Lab Take-Home. The Mad Science® Magnet Lab enhances the learning of magnetic fields and demonstrates how like poles repel and opposite poles attract.  (K to 6)


Sonic Sounds - Music and all sorts of merry sounds engage students in sound experiments and live demonstrations showing the properties and transmission of sound waves. Students listen to sounds made with solid materials—from plastic, to metal, to string. Ordinary objects like handheld horns, metal screws, wooden ratchets and beads transform into a story sound-effect symphony. Electronic devices reveal frequency when a pitch-changing machine alters the students’ voices to gruff monsters or happy chipmunks. (K to 6)


Watts-Up - Make indoor lightning and conduct hair-raising experiments with our electro-static generator. Children discover an electric charge’s basic properties, learn to distinguish between static electricity and electrical current, and explore the science behind these phenomena. Hands-on activities provide a tactile lesson in charging and discharging objects with static electricity. Children will be able to relate a newfound understanding of lightning and static-electric shocks. Students assemble a Static Stick to take home for some electron jumping fun! (K to 6)


Current Events - Students get charged up about the science of current electricity! They learn how tiny invisible particles—electrons—power everything from the fridge to the radio. All their problem-solving skills are put to use to create series and parallel circuits. Completing the circuit lights a bulb and sounds a buzzer. Once students master circuits, they learn about insulators, conductors, and experiment to find out what conducts. Using their new know-how helps solve mysterious hidden connections. Fun-damental Forces - Find out what makes the world go around in an entertaining introduction to the basic concepts of forces. Sir Isaac Newton would be proud when young scientists investigate his law of inertia. Students experiment with mass and balance using their own centers of gravity. A comparison between rubber and dough balls brings the physical effects of forces to light. Gyroscopes, bike wheels, and toy racetracks reveal the concepts of precession and centripetal force. (K to 6)


Fantastic Fliers - Students discover the four forces that affect flight: lift, thrust, gravity, and drag. They make and test various plane designs to see these forces in action. Students fold and fly the Delta Dart plane. Shooting the Stunt Flier plane straight up makes it loop back! They make a Rotor Kite twist and an airship twirl. A fast flying, spinning cylinder gets launched into a tough target.  Students learn about the effects of shape and structure as they launch their lightweight gliders. (K to 6)


Super Structures - Super Structures lets students act like junior architects and engineers! Students push and pull their partners’ hands to learn about compression and tension, and strengthen a sponge beam with knitting needle rods. A tension test lets students determine the toughest textile. They test out shapes for strength, and then watch to see if a paper column can with-stand the Column Collapser! They build a Roman arch block bridge too! (K to 6)


Under Pressure - Under Pressure is an exciting immersion in the science of air pressure and Bernoulli’s principle. Students enjoy the exciting tale of the Viking ship while learning about thermodynamics and weather systems. A hopping, hovering table tennis ball lets students experiment with unbalanced air pressure. Air blasting Airzookas are a fun way to understand the physics of breathing. students apply their knowledge to overcome gravity using compressed air. (K to 6)
 MS Machines - Students discover how simple machines make our lives easier. They learn about the six different types of simple machines: the screw, lever, inclined plane, wedge, pulley, and wheel and axle. Students launch with levers, secure with screws, and work with wedges through hands-on activities! A large child-operated pulley system demonstrates how pulleys help us move heavy objects easily. Students experiment with friction and force as they wind-up for some high-speed zooming action. (K to 6)  This workshop has an additional equipment fee.


Energy Burst - This energetic class explores energy transfer and energy conversion! Students jump and push up to reach their potential. They stretch and release wound rubber band gadgets. There is time to unwind with windup toys that swim, hop and flip. Students spring into action with poppers, Boinks, and jumping bugs. Pulling back a car lets students control how far it goes. Students pair up and drop frog splat balls from different heights. The Catapult Take-Home has the potential to get kinetic! (K to 6)


Moving Motion - Catapult into Newton’s three laws of motion! They yank a cloth from under dishes and send crash test dummies flying. They adjust the mass of two identical cars and learn how heavier objects need a bigger push to move the same distance. Students drop two plastic eggs—one heavier than the other—and find out they hit the ground at the same time! They see action–reaction forces at work as a fan cart races across the room and mini-rockets launch through the air. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.  (K to 6)


Where's the Air? - Bernoulli never had it so good in this fun look at air pressure and aerodynamics. Why do airplanes fly and boats float? Let's take a close, hands-on look at all sorts of neat stuff involving Bernoulli's principles. The Mad Science® Air Blaster powers-up on pressure. Students see how compressed air can launch foam rockets far away. Mounting and pumping it blasts it way up high! (K to 2)


Sound Basics - The Beach Boys sang of good vibrations, and that's exactly what we'll look at! Surf sound waves, catch some, and amplify others. Play with a supersonic banger and compose a Mad Science Symphony. The Mad Science® Sonic Horn is a sound maker that works in the same way as many musical instruments. Blowing into the blowhole makes the membrane vibrate, which produces a sound, and the tube acts as a resonance chamber that amplifies the volume. Students have a blast discovering the unique sound created by the vibration of each membrane material. (K to 2)


Good Vibrations - Investigate the science of sound in this hands-on introduction to the basics of vibration, frequency and pitch. Discover how instruments use vibration to make music and you will be amazed as you hear church bells through your fingers and music though your teeth. (3 to 5)


Magnificent Magnets - Experience the pull of magnetism. Ever been an atom in a magnet? Don't be repelled! Find out exactly what magnets like to "hang out" with. Visit the North and South poles and frolic in invisible fields. Build magnificent magnet chains and play with some of the wildest forces in the universe. (K to 2)


Mischievous Magnets - You'll discover that opposites really do attract in this exciting look at magnetism. Visit the North and South poles and explore their fields! Build your very own compass, and learn how magnets can help you find your way! (3 to 5)
 Turn up the Volume - students will use critical thinking skills and the scientific method to explore the concept of volume and how it is measures using the metric system. Students fill-up on science and practice safe lab techniques and take part in basic bench-work. (3 to 5) This workshop has an additional equipment fee.


Electricity - Excite some electrons as you construct some serious circuits during this program all about electricity.  Test various materials for conductivity with space-age plasma balls.  Finally, create and play an electronic game.  Students play with the static forces at work.  Nothing sparks imaginative learning like this charged-up experiment! (3 to 5)

Lab Works - Students become lab scientists-in-training in this whirlwind program on laboratory techniques! Each student will learn to manipulate an assortment of lab equipment in a series of hands-on activities. They will learn to transfer droplets using a pipette, and larger quantities using a stirring rod. They will also learn to swirl with an Erlenmeyer flask. The one-hour program ends with a cool demonstration by the instructor to show off the lab techniques learned in class. (K to 6)  This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Junior Reactors - Students are introduced to the concepts of atoms and reactions! A demonstration of the differences between physical and chemical reactions is followed by a hands-on series of experiments. The relative size of an atom is introduced in a cutting edge race as the students try to reduce a strip of paper down to its atomic size! The class wraps up with a creative molecular session. (K to 6)

pH Phactor - Students explore the crazy chemistry of acids and bases in this fascinating one-hour program on the pH scale. The pH Phactors hydrogen and hydroxide give a colorful introduction, and the Phantastic pH test is applied to common household chemicals. Students are challenged to bring a mystery liquid to a perfect pH balance. The Phestival ends with a Stopper-Popper reaction! It’s an acid and base challenge! Slime Time -Ooze into a gooey hour of sliming around! The Mad Science slime recipe is revealed in this ooey gooey chemistry class! Students will learn about slime and its basic ingredients in a series of hands-on activities. Polymer paper clips and cross-linking magnetic marbles will help to examine the key components of slime. Varied concoctions of slime will stir up in scientific style, and the properties of slime will be tested in a team-spirited fashion at the Slime Olympics! (K to 6)

Chem in a Flash - Students take a trip through several fields of chemistry & discover the factors that can change the rate of a reaction. They role-play an activity demonstrating different rates of reaction. This is followed by a hands-on demonstration on oxidation where the role of salt—as a catalyst—is observed. The instructor demonstrates quick-acting reactions such as precipitation and acid-base reactions, followed by a balloon-expanding experiment to test limiting reagents (factors). Students will explore crystallization and receive a Take-Home Action Flask kit to perform more experiments. (K to 6) This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Super Sticky Stuff - Get stuck on science! Start with a close-up examination of how Velcro hook-and-loop fasteners work, followed by a hands-on experiment with different tape adhesives. Experiments are performed with wet glues and a ranking test is done to determine the optimal glue to use on various materials. They use scientific labware and everyday items introduce the concepts of suction, hydrogen bonding, and static cling. (K to 6) This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Dry Ice Capades - Probe the shifting states of matter through a series of engaging demonstrations and inquiry-based activities. The class warms up with a molecular movement exercise to learn about the three states of matter. Next, students observe melted and resolidified metal—a shift of states from solid to liquid right before their eyes. Dry ice is used to explore the properties of matter at extreme temperatures. The class rolls toward a grand finale that engages the group in catching a cloud!  (K to 6)  This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Che-mystery - Students discover the mysterious wonders of chemical science. They learn the difference between physical and chemical changes through exciting, hands-on investigations; watch crystals form in water glass; and see acetone reduce foam to a puddle of goo. Students get their hands dirty with a non-Newtonian fluid and use hydrophobic compounds to make marbled masterpieces! (K to 6)

Kitchen Chemistry - Students get clued in on the chemical reactions that occur when they prepare, analyze, and digest their food. The class gets cooking with a color-changing solution display. Students divide common kitchen activities into chemical and physical reactions. A balloon blow-up demonstration helps them discover that yeast makes bread rise. Students test food samples in search of nutrients, starch, and protein. Students put real food through (K to 6) This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Mix It Up - Challenge students to branch out into the physical aspect of chemistry. A four-layer mixture shakes up the idea of water and solutions. Students pick up concepts of physical mixtures, solutions, and suspensions with sorting activities. Colorful demonstrations explain molecular movement and show how an antacid suspension buffers an upset stomach. Students carry out a salting out technique to pull soap out of solution. They use tools of the trade to clarify water and to separate mixtures into their components. (K to 6)
Matter of Fact - Explore molecules and how they are held together. See the dramatic differences between physical and chemical changes as you mix up a batch of your very own Mad Science Putty to take home. Students take home an activity cup with our specially made Mad Science putty. (3 to 6)

Slippery Science - Giant molecule chains called polymers are vital to modern civilization and to life itself! Learn what makes these maverick molecules to unique and so very important. Explore, create, and play with some polymers you may already know. Our original recipe of slime in a Mad Science® Activity Cup. The 5-ounce container made of durable plastic and it comes with a watertight lid easily removed by all. The cup even has a color-coded graduation making it easy to mix and measure any Mad Science® creation! (K to 2)

Playing with Polymers - See why chemicals have all the fun! We'll explore, create, and play with the most entertaining and useful molecule known to science, and discover its many shapes and forms! We'll even make a polymer that you get to take home and keep. Our original recipe of slime in a Mad Science® Activity Cup. The 5-ounce container made of durable plastic and it comes with a watertight lid easily removed by all. The cup even has a color-coded graduation making it easy to mix and measure any Mad Science® creation! (3 to 5)

Tantalizing Taste - Develop a taste for science! Students get hands-on with magnifiers, model tongues, and mirrors to see what their own tongues look like. A quick tasting test sorts out which class members are supertasters. See how much sugar is in those kids drinks! A nose plugging experiment links taste and smell, and students scientifically sniff out extracted scents. Students find out how carbonation makes their drinks fizzy and participate in a classic taste test. (K to 6)

Mission Nutrition - Students focus on nutrition and fitness, including the essential components of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Students build a nutritional pie chart using life sized food replicas and conduct hands-on experiments to improve their understanding of how food fuels our bodies. The students also get to experiment with emulsions to learn how bile works. At the end of the program the students will receive a (K to 6) This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Bugs - Students get engrossed in entomology! Insect anatomy is introduced and examined up close with authentic insect specimens. An ultraviolet powder demonstration lights up the truth on how insects spread pollen. Students learn how insects adapt by building insect puzzles at habitat stations. They examine a bag of insect defense representations and choose the one they want. (K to 6)

All About Animals - Brings students into the amazing animal kingdom! Students learn about diverse, astounding creatures on earth as they experiment with camouflage and get hands-on with real tooth and claw replicas. Students see what’s inside animals and discover which animals are truly spineless! Organizing a wide range of creatures teaches how scientists classify everything from elephants to arachnids. The real circle of life is revealed as students explore and compare animal life cycles. (K to 6)

Life in the Sea - Plunge students into the depths of ocean life. Explore different ocean ecosystems and learn about the plants and animals that live there. Classifying creatures from sharks to sponges gives them a taste of ocean diversity. In Whales to Scale, they compare shark and whale teeth, and measure the size of these incredible predators. Hands-on activities teach the interconnectedness of an ocean food web, and the consequences of overfishing.  (K to 6)

Dinosaurs - Investigating the habits, needs and characteristics of dinosaurs facilitates the exploration of the fossilization process. Hand-on activities assist students with their understanding of fossils and dinosaurs. Examine real fossil casts, and explore the differences in the teeth of herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs. This workshop is set into multiple stations for students to experience dinosaur digs, black tar pits, & dinosaur bone reconstruction. See fossil replicas and touch real fossils from dinosaurs. (K to 2)

Body Basics - Study the science of your insides by learning about the major systems of the human body. Learn about how your food is digested, how your blood flows through your body and how your brain controls all of these parts.  Students learn to identify the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems with colorful stickers. This is a fun way to find out about your insides! (K to 2)

Photosynthesis - This workshop provides students with an introduction to photosynthesis, including an understanding of the chemical processes at work in the plant, plant respiration, and the role of plants in food webs. Witness the actual creation of oxygen from plants and examine plants under a microscope!  (3 to 6)

Cells - This hands-on workshop provides students with an introduction to cell structure, including an understanding that cells are the building blocks of all living things, basic cell process and cell division. Students will create their very own model of a cell.  (3 to 6)

Eco-System Explorers - Investigate the interconnections present in nature. This workshop will introduce students to the elements of ecosystems. Students will build ecosystem models, explore the elements of energy webs, reflect on how humans impact ecosystems, and use field journals for everyday explorations and more.  (3 to 6)

Planets and Moons - Students set off on a voyage to discover the Solar System. Students impersonate the planets to compare their sizes and distances from the Sun, recreate a solar and lunar eclipse, and become particles on a voyage into a planet's core. Students learn about the forces needed to escape gravity, study moon rocks and view the planets through micro-slides. (K to 6)

Atmosphere and Beyond - Students gain an understanding of the importance of the atmosphere for life on Earth, and compare the composition of Earth's atmosphere with those of other planets in the solar system. Students will be challenged to keep Arny the Aquanaut dry during an underwater walk, and learn how the particles in our air help create beautiful sunsets. (K to 6)

Space Phenomena - Students will explore the phenomenal events that take place in the night sky. They will create their own impact craters, and observe model meteors fall through a model atmosphere. A friendly game of satellite tag will to teach students about reflected light Students will examine meteorites and then witness a model comet form right before their eyes. (K to 6)

Sun and Stars - Students are introduced to stars and the galaxies they form. Children learn about the facts of our sun and examine various stellar life cycles, view a celestial globe, and observe the birth of a star through a micro-slide viewer. They construct a three dimensional constellation to understand the location of stars in our and other galaxies.   (K to 6)

Wacky Water - Students make waves with Wacky Water and immerse themselves in some wet and wonderful science. Sinking soda introduces density. The investigation continues with liquid layers in the Density Stacker activity. Students apply their knowledge to real world problems such as oil spills. How hard are they to clean up?  (K to 6)

Earthworks - Students dig in to Earth science! Earth’s layers are introduced with a spotlight on its outer rocky layer. Students check out three rock samples to find out how they were made and where they were formed. They inspect minerals with an ultraviolet light to see them fluoresce. They model the moving plates that cause bends and breaks in the Earth’s solid rock layer.  (K to 6)

Walloping Weather - Students get weather-wise in this climate-controlled class! A demonstration using heat sensitive paper & a flashlight brings to light the reasons for seasons. Students discover how air affects weather, and perform a test to prove that air is everywhere. Students try out tools that meteorologists use to measure weather. They create three-day weather forecasts for cities around the world and stage a statically charged indoor storm.  (K to 6)

Black & Blue Oceans - This workshop introduces students to environmental issues relating to our water system. Through a hands-on approach students explore the effects of, and difficulties in cleaning up oil spills. This lesson provides an opportunity to develop scientific skills through inquiry based instructional methods. Students will devise and test oil spill techniques in a mock oil spill and learn all about the pollution that plagues the oceans. Students create a wave in a bottle using oil and water. See the interaction of oil & water and visualize their tendency to remain apart. (3 to 6)

Mineral Mania - Recreate the process of rock formation and devise ways to identify and classify rocks and minerals. Experience the thrill of panning for gems; the gems you find, you can take home for further study and investigation.  (3 to 6)

Decomposers - Take some worms, add a little garbage and what do you get? Fertilized soil and a whole lot of fun. This workshop allows students to gain an understanding of the concept of decomposition. (K to 2)

Optical Illusions - Students explore the physics of optical illusions. They learn how our eyes can trick our brains as a twisting coil climbs up and down without moving, and a towel turns into a dog! Students manipulate flexible mirrors and explore the world with inverted vision. Hands-on laminates provide students the opportunity to create their own illusions. Students try out classic mirror illusions in class. (K to 6)

Science of Magic - Leaves students astounded, amazed, and educated! They learn how magicians use our assumptions and perceptions about how the world works to entertain us. Discovering how to make objects disappear and reappear using optical illusions, polymers, mirrors, as well as hidden compartments, sleight-of-hand, and misdirection are part of the learning experience. The art of escape with Houdini’s chains and the power of perception with the crayon mind-reading trick are a few classics. The (K to 6)  This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Detective Science - Students use science to crack a case! The crime happens just before the Bustertown bake-off. Mr. Baker’s big, fat, chewy, chocolate chip cookie is sabotaged and his recipe is stolen. The case kicks off with a crime scene investigation. The students examine fingerprints, mystery powders, ink samples, and teeth impressions. They also practice their memory skills to create a composite! Analyzing all the evidence is what helps pinpoint the perpetrator. (K to 6)

Movie Effects - Give students a chance to sit in the director’s chair and discover why science is the real star on the big screen. Exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities allow students to discover the science behind the amazing sound and weather effects from their favorite movies. Students investigate 3-D technology, and experience how this effect can make them feel like part of the action. Motion pictures come alive with a spinning praxinoscope. (K to 6)

Science of Toys - Students test, play, and ponder over what makes toys work. They spin into action with kinetic top toys. One changes color and one flips over, but they all release stored energy. Students balance bugs and birds to reveal their centers of gravity. They learn that opposites attract with magnetic toys and then take a turn at creating a gear train. Don’t forget to move out of the way for The String Thing—it’s motorized! (K to 6)

Rocket Science - Children are provided with a valuable hands-on experience as they build a Mad Science Skyblazer Rocket. As they move through the various stages of construction, children learn the components of a rocket and the roles each play in a rocket's flight. Children will learn about the four forces affecting flight in lessons that will be reinforced with a fun game in which they race through space.  (K to 6)  This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

Space Travel - Students will launch their investigation of rocket propulsion using the compressed air inside balloons for thrust. The class will race balloon rockets and be challenged to devise a balloon-powered rocket car. For our grand finale, students will witness a thrilling model rocket launch, and learn the meticulous preparations necessary to send up a rocket!  (K to 6)

Space Technology -This is an exploration of space-related technologies used on Earth. Students will help laser light through a maze, use principles of radar technology to find hidden mountains, and discover the importance of points of reference to depth perception. From there, it's out into space with the launch of a satellite into orbit & an examination of potential threats to spacecraft. Students will leave revved up by an investigation of shuttle fuel! (K to 6)

Living in Space - Students will set out on a mission to investigate life in space! Students will see the special adaptations needed to live in space, learn about mission training techniques and participate in the construction of a model space station. How do astronauts eat or go to the bathroom? (K to 6)

Glow Show - How do we perceive light and its effect on objects? The concept of how colors are perceived in white light is presented using a hands-on tri-color experiment. Fluorescence and phosphorescence are unveiled in a black light demonstration. A discussion on the commercial applications of glow-in-the-dark products is followed by a challenge to find fluorescing materials among common objects. Chemiluminescence is demystified using a flashlight analogy. (K to 6)

Get Connected - Take on telecommunications with this one-hour class! Interactive activities include seeing the sound of your voice and testing out telephone lines. Students chat on their own telephone network, find the limits to low-power radio signals, wind through a cell tower relay, and learn how to track cell phone users. The class wraps up with a card-flipping history quiz that builds on cellular network knowledge. (K to 6)

Radical Robots - Students become wrapped up in the world of robotics! Volunteers act out a robot, remote control device, and an automaton. A reading and writing robot draw shapes, detects objects, and tracks lines. Students circulate learning centers to control an automaton through sound, move a robot through a maze, and make a soccer robot score a goal! A soft and snuggly robotic seal pup is passed around for all to pet. (K to 6)

Super Power Sources - Embark on a quest for alternative energy sources. Harness the sun’s heat with a parabolic mirror and choose volunteers to ramp up a power generation station. They act as power hunters to pinpoint renewable and nonrenewable resources. Tight teamwork turns on solar devices and a united breath of air runs a fan-powered light bulb. A small scale demonstration reveals the enormous potential for fuel cells. (K to 6) This workshop has an additional equipment fee.
